The short version
This website uses one analytics tool, Google Analytics, to understand traffic in aggregate: which pages get visited, roughly where visitors come from and on what kind of device. In the EEA and the UK it runs only if you agree to it in the cookie banner. Elsewhere it runs by default, and you can turn it off on this page at any time. We use no other analytics tool, no advertising cookies and no cross-site tracking, and we never sell your data.
What cookies are
Cookies are small text files a website saves on your device so it can recognize you between page views or visits. Some are deleted when you close your browser (session cookies), others stay for a set period (persistent cookies). This site also uses your browser's local storage for a couple of simple preferences; we list those below too, in the spirit of full transparency, even though they are not technically cookies.
Strictly necessary storage
These entries make the site itself work. They contain no tracking and no personal data, and they never leave your browser.

Statistics: Google Analytics
Google Analytics helps us see how the site is used in statistical, aggregate form. The data does not directly identify you, and we use it for nothing beyond understanding traffic.
If you are in the EEA or the UK, these cookies are set only if you press Accept in the cookie banner. Press Decline and Google Analytics never loads, and none of them are set. Everywhere else, they are set by default and no banner is shown — use the button at the foot of this page to bring the choice back and decline.

Embedded videos
A few blog posts embed a YouTube video. We use YouTube's no-cookie domain,
youtube-nocookie.com, so no tracking cookies are set unless you
press play. If you do play a video, YouTube may then set its own cookies,
governed by
Google's Privacy Policy.
A post with no video makes no request to YouTube at all.
Your choice and how to change it
Where local law requires it, the banner asks before anything analytic is set, and nothing is measured until you accept. Everywhere else analytics starts on and you can switch it off here whenever you like. Declining costs you nothing: the site works exactly the same. To change your mind, reset your choice and the banner will ask again on the next page load:
