Email app passwords · Yahoo Mail

Create a Yahoo Mail
app password.

Any mail app that doesn't open Yahoo's own branded sign-in page needs an app password — your normal Yahoo password will be refused over IMAP, POP and SMTP.

Applies to yahoo.com, ymail.com, rocketmail.com addresses.

Step by step

How to create your app password.

  1. Sign in to your Yahoo Account Security page at login.yahoo.com/account/security.
  2. Under External connections, click Create app password.
  3. Enter a name for the app.
  4. Click Generate password.
  5. Use the password in your mail app, then click Done.

Worth knowing

  • Unlike Google and Apple, Yahoo app passwords survive a password change — changing your Yahoo password does not invalidate them. The only way to revoke one is to delete it from the same screen.
  • Yahoo gates who can create one: use a browser you've signed in to Yahoo from for several days, and avoid private/incognito windows. If it still fails, Yahoo's guidance is to use webmail or its own app.
  • The same Account Security page covers Yahoo-run mailboxes on other brands, including Rogers, Frontier, AT&T and Cox addresses.

Or skip the app password entirely

BlueMail signs in to Yahoo Mail through the provider's own login screen, the same way your browser does — so there's no code to generate, copy or replace later, and nothing breaks the next time you change your password. Free on iOS, Android, macOS, Windows and Linux.
