Email app passwords · AOL

Create a AOL
app password.

AOL requires an app password for any mail app that asks you to type a password rather than showing AOL's own sign-in page.

Applies to aol.com, aim.com, verizon.net addresses.

Step by step

How to create your app password.

  1. Sign in to your AOL Account Security page.
  2. Click Generate app password (or Generate and manage app passwords).
  3. Click Get Started.
  4. Enter a name for the app, then Generate password.
  5. Use the password in your mail app and click Done.

Worth knowing

  • As with Yahoo, an AOL app password stays valid after you change your account password — delete it to revoke access.
  • AOL applies an eligibility check: create the password from a browser you've used to sign in to AOL for several days, not an incognito window. AOL states plainly that customer care cannot override this check.
  • Use imap.aol.com for ongoing sync. AOL also documents export.imap.aol.com, but that is a one-time bulk-export server — it isn't meant for a normal account setup.

Or skip the app password entirely

BlueMail signs in to AOL through the provider's own login screen, the same way your browser does — so there's no code to generate, copy or replace later, and nothing breaks the next time you change your password. Free on iOS, Android, macOS, Windows and Linux.
