@gemai brings AI right into your email conversation, available in your inbox whenever you need it. Mention it the way you would a colleague, send your message, and it replies just like a real contact, ready for your follow-up questions.
GemAI's answers are visible to everyone on the conversation, and only to them. There's nothing to forward and no duplicate messages to send around: each person works from the same context and can join the back-and-forth, making it real-time collaboration that stays private to the group.
How to Find
Inside any compose or reply window, type @ in the body. GemAI appears in the contact dropdown as an avatar suggestion. Select it.
You can also tap the @AI button in the compose toolbar, which inserts @ and opens the same dropdown for you.
The GemAI contact is only available when GemAI is enabled in Settings > Advanced > Enable GemAI.
How to Use
- Open compose or reply
- Type
@gemaiand select GemAI from the dropdown - The compose window enters GemAI mode:
- The GemAI contact is added as a recipient
- A system banner explains you are in a GemAI conversation (Android and web only)
- Write what you want to ask or instruct
- Send the message normally
- The AI's reply arrives in the same conversation, just like a reply from a real person
- Keep replying back and forth to continue the conversation
To exit GemAI mode, tap the × on the system banner. The GemAI recipient is removed and the compose window unlocks.
Options
@gemai conversations do not expose tone, length or emoji options inside compose, those settings live in the GemAI Writer sheet. If you want a specific style of response, write the request that way in the body, for example:
- "Write a short, formal version"
- "Explain in simple words"
- "Make it sound friendly"
Tips
- Use
@gemaifor true back-and-forth, ask, refine, ask again. For one-shot drafting, GemAI Writer is faster - Bring an existing email into the conversation by replying with
@gemaiadded, the AI will see the email's context - Each
@gemaiconversation gets its own session, so two running in parallel do not mix context
Daily Limits
Free accounts have separate caps for @gemai conversations:
- 5 new conversations per day
- 20 messages per conversation per day
- 3 conversations started via the avatar shortcut per day
When you hit a cap, a premium upgrade modal appears.
Troubleshooting
GemAI does not appear in the @ dropdown
- Check Settings > Advanced > Enable GemAI
- Make sure your account allows GemAI, some managed or geographically restricted accounts hide it
I cannot remove the GemAI recipient
- Use the × on the GemAI system banner inside the compose body, that is the correct way to leave GemAI mode
- Closing compose without sending also clears the mode
The system banner does not appear on iOS
- Working as designed, the in-compose banner is shown on Android and web only, on iOS the compose window still locks to GemAI mode but without the banner
My follow-up message is not getting an AI reply
- Check your internet connection
- Verify you have remaining messages in the daily per-conversation cap, hitting 20 messages in one conversation blocks further replies until tomorrow
