Can't Add My Account - IMAP Disabled

If you see the message "IMAP is disabled on this server. Please enable it or use another protocol.", it means IMAP access is turned off for this account. IMAP is required to sync emails in the app.

You can see this message either while adding an account, or later on an account that was already working — in which case it usually means the provider or your administrator has since turned IMAP off.

How to Fix This Issue

1. Check Your Email Provider Settings

  • For personal Gmail addresses (@gmail.com): IMAP is always on and can no longer be turned off — since January 2025 Google removed the setting entirely. If you see this error on a personal Gmail address, the cause is not an IMAP toggle; remove the account and add it again, and if it persists, contact us.
  • For Google Workspace (business/school Google accounts): an administrator can still block IMAP for the whole organization. Ask your IT administrator to allow IMAP access.
  • For Outlook/Office 365: some Microsoft accounts (especially work/school accounts) have IMAP disabled by admin policy. Contact your IT administrator for assistance.
  • For Other Providers: check their settings or support documentation to enable IMAP. Some providers only expose IMAP after you enable it in their webmail, and some require an app-specific password as well.

2. Enable IMAP and Retry

  • After enabling IMAP, restart the app and try adding the account again.

If the issue persists, please check your email provider's documentation or contact their support.
