Displaying an Unread Badge on Older Android Devices That Don't Natively Support Badges

Android

Whether BlueMail can show a numbered badge on its app icon is decided by your device, not by BlueMail: it depends on your launcher, your Android version, and the manufacturer's software. Some launchers show a count, some show only a small dot, and some show nothing at all.

What Android Itself Supports

On every Android version BlueMail runs on — Android 9 and later — the platform's own behaviour is a notification dot: a small mark on the app icon, with no number. A numbered count is an extra that individual launchers add on top, which is why two phones on the same Android version can behave differently.

Two consequences catch people out:

  1. The dot or badge is tied to an active notification. Dismissing BlueMail's notifications from the notification shade, or opening the app, clears it.
  2. A third-party launcher may not implement badges at all, even on a device whose stock launcher does.

If Your Launcher Doesn't Show a Badge

  • Use a BlueMail widget instead. BlueMail offers a 1×1 Unread Count widget and a 3×3 scrollable widget, either of which can be pointed at any account or at your Unified Inbox. Unlike the icon badge, a widget doesn't depend on launcher support or on having an active notification.
  • Switch back to your device's own launcher, if you've installed a replacement.
  • Check your launcher's settings. Nova, Niagara and most other popular launchers have a notification-badge option that is not always on by default.
  • Check Android's own setting: Settings › Notifications › App icon badges (the wording varies by manufacturer) must be enabled.

Adding a Widget

Long-press an empty area of your home screen and tap Widgets (on some devices, open the app drawer and switch to the Widgets tab). Scroll to BlueMail, then drag the 1×1 or 3×3 widget onto your home screen.
