Can you Reset My Password?

Every password has one place it can be reset, and this page points you at the right one. If your mailbox is a @bluemailx.com address, BlueMail hosts it and can reset it for you. For a mailbox from another provider, the password belongs to whoever runs it, so the reset happens on their side. The table below shows which password you are being asked for and where each one is recovered.

Which password is it?

Three different passwords all get described as "my BlueMail password", and they are recovered in three different places. Work out which one you have before trying to reset anything.

What it isWho holds itWhere to recover it
Your email account's password — the one for your Gmail, Outlook, iCloud, or work mailboxYour email providerYour provider's own password-recovery page — see below

Most people have no separate BlueMail password at all. As Sign in and Get Started with BlueMail explains, you sign in with an address you already have, so there is no new account to create. If you added your mailbox with Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, AOL or Apple, BlueMail never received a password in the first place — the sign-in went through OAuth, and the thing that expires is a token, not a password. In that case you don't reset anything; you sign in again. See How Do I Update My Password on My Account Using OAuth?

If you already know the password

When you have changed your password with your provider, tell BlueMail the new one:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Select Accounts.
  3. Tap the account whose password changed.
  4. Select Update Password.
Settings → Accounts → account → Update Password

This only stores the new password. It does not change anything at your provider.

If you have forgotten your email password

You have to reset it with your provider, then come back and enter the new one using the steps above. Recovery lives on your provider's own sign-in page, not in BlueMail:

ProviderWhere to reset it
Gmail, Google WorkspaceGoogle account recovery
Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live, Microsoft 365Microsoft password reset
iCloud, me.com, mac.comApple iForgot
Yahoo MailYahoo sign-in helper
AOL MailAOL password help
A work or company mailboxYour IT administrator — see Can't Add a Work or Company Email Account
Your own domain, or a provider not listedWhoever hosts the mailbox — usually your web host's control panel

If you don't know who runs your mailbox, the part after the @ is the clue. An address ending in your own domain name is almost always hosted by the company you bought the domain from.

If your provider needs an app-specific password

Some providers will not accept your normal password in a mail app at all, even when it is correct. They require a separate password generated for the app. This is the single most common reason a password that "works on the website" is refused in BlueMail.

For a provider-by-provider table of what tends to be wrong, see Why Won't My Account Add? Quick Fixes.

If you are setting up a new phone

Moving BlueMail to a new device brings your account list across, but each mailbox still has to be unlocked with its own password — and that is your provider's password, from the table above, not a BlueMail one. See Moving BlueMail to a New Phone or Computer.

If the transfer screen asks you to enter your passwords again and will not continue, your accounts have usually arrived already. Leave that screen and open each account in turn to enter its password, using the steps above.

If a @bluemailx.com password reset doesn't finish

You have two routes for a @bluemailx.com mailbox. In the app, Settings | Accounts | [your account] | Reset Password walks you through it, confirming your recovery email first; see How Do I Change or Update My BlueMailX Account Password?. You can also reset from the BlueMail Account Portal in a browser.

There is a known problem with this flow. After you enter the verification code, the reset can return you to the previous screen instead of continuing, which leaves the password unchanged no matter how many times you try. If that happens, it is not something you can work around from your side — email support@bluemail.me and say that the reset returns to the previous screen after the verification code, and support can complete it for you.

What BlueMail cannot do

  • We cannot reset, recover, or tell you your email password. We never receive it in a readable form, and for OAuth accounts we never receive one at all.
  • We cannot release mail from your provider's side. If your provider has locked the account, only your provider can unlock it.
  • There is no "forgot password" link inside the app for a mailbox you added yourself. Recovery is always on the provider's site. Several readers have asked for one; it does not exist today.
