How Do I Fix a Typo in a Saved Contact or Autocomplete?

A mistyped email address has a way of coming back: it keeps appearing in autocomplete, and one distracted tap sends your mail to the wrong place again. The fix depends on where the typo lives — and it can live in two places at once, because BlueMail suggests recipients from your contacts and from every address you have previously emailed.

If it's a saved contact

Fix the contact where it is stored:

  • A contact from your device or provider — correct it in your phone's Contacts app, or in your provider's contacts (e.g. Google Contacts), and BlueMail picks the change up from there. How Do I Delete a Contact? explains which source a contact comes from and where to remove it so it's gone everywhere.
  • A contact you added in BlueMail — go to Settings | Groups & Contacts, open the Contacts tab, tap the 3-dot menu next to the wrong entry and choose Delete Contact, then re-add it with the correct address (the add-contact icon — a person with a + — is at the top right).

If autocomplete remembers the typo

Once you've emailed the mistyped address even once, it becomes a suggestion of its own — fixing the saved contact doesn't remove it. To stop it:

  1. Go to Settings | Groups & Contacts, and open the Contacts tab.
  2. Find the mistyped address (search helps).
  3. Tap its 3-dot menu and choose Hide in Autocomplete — or Delete Contact to drop the entry entirely.

From then on, only the corrected address is suggested. More on the contact menu itself is in Edit a Contact.

Deleted it, but the typo still autocompletes?

A deleted address can sometimes keep appearing as a suggestion. The workaround is to give it the autocomplete-hide flag before deleting it:

  1. Add the mistyped address back as a contact — the add-contact icon (a person with a +) at the top right of the Contacts tab.
  2. Tap its 3-dot menu and choose Hide in Autocomplete.
  3. Now delete it: 3-dot menuDelete Contact.

The hide setting sticks, and the address stops being suggested for good.
